Who was Walt Disney?

Written by Whitney Stewart; Illustrated by Nancy Harrison

This story is a biography of Walt Disney and his life and how he started his journey into making the happiest places on Earth.

This story is classified as a biography because it is someone else writing about a person's life. If the person that the story is about wrote it, it would be called an autobiography.

An activity I would use in my classroom would be to have the students write about their favorite spot in Disney World and why. If a student hasn't ever been, have them write why they do or do not want to go there. Another activity would be to have the children make their own amusement park and list everything they would include in their park.

Reader Response Questions
Have you ever been or would you like to go to Disney World?
What do you think about Walt Disney's journey?
Do you enjoy learning about celebrities' lives?

I love the illustrations for this book. They remind me of characitures that you would get done, say, in Disney World!

In my research, I found that there are so many of these biographies all with illustrations by Nancy Harrison. These biographies are a series of books for young children to learn about famous people they learn about in school.

  1. Another classroom activity to try would be to explore Disney movies. Most children are exposed to Disney movies from a very young age. Princesses, Toy Story, Dalmatians, Cars, etc. So many movies for children who love just about anything. Choose 5-6 movies and divide the classroom so that each group has a different movie. Have students narrow down the main characters and describe each one. How they change throughout the story, what they look like, any conflicts they go through, and any details they think are important to that character. The groups will present their characters to the class afterward.

  2. Ask the children "Who is your Favorite Disney Character?" Have them bring in a picture or draw a picture of their of this character. Have each child share their character with the class, the way Walt Disney would have done, by being silly and funny.
